When people think Arizona tourism, golf is usually the first thing to come to mind. However, there are some people who visit the state to take advantage of the nice weather. It's a chance for people to leave their cold jobs selling horse fencing supplies behind for a while and take some time for themselves and their families. The great weather means that there are things to do outside all day long; good news for anyone with kids.

There is more good news if you are a family travelling in the vicinity of Mesa Arizona real estate, or if you are a history buff. Arizona was the site of many of the legends which came out of America's wild west, and lots of the action was right near Mesa. Where today you may see vacuum trucks hauling loads back and forth, there was once only desert with the occasional horse passing by. And everyone was in constant danger of attack from the area's Apache tribes!

That's right, cultural conflicts, gun fights, the pony express, and other legendary wild west action defined the early days of Arizona. And the state, and the area around Mesa, was no stranger to that great phenomenon of the frontier days, the gold rush. Leftover lead castings and decrepit buildings are silent reminders of the role gold played in Mesa history when you take a trip to the Goldfield ghost town.

The first thing you will probably notice when you go to Goldfield is the incredible view. The town is right at the heart of the Superstition Mountains, and that makes for what you would think was prime real estate. However, once the gold ran out, so did interest in the area. Once home to 1500 people, more than a hundred years ago, the Goldfield ghost town is now just a tourist attraction. You can see how people lived and worked towards the end of the 19th century, before conveniences such as Allis Chalmers pump parts came along.

You can you're the ghost town on your own, but a lot of people take advantage of the guided tours. The guides know the best sites, and have information which can put the trip into perspective. Also, most people aren't brave enough to take that underground mine tour on their own, GPS with heat shrink tubing protection or not!

If you are looking for a unique experience and a fun outing near Mesa, Goldfield is certainly worth the visit.
